Yes friends We are talking about the former Indian player and one of the most successful captains, Kapil Dev, who led India to its first World Cup victory. His spectacular bowling and aggressive batting made him a fan favorite, and his intimidation on the field was such that even the best batsmen were afraid to face his deliveries.
And friends, it is because of his exceptional talent that he has made a unique identity for himself in the world of cricket, and this is why, even decades after his retirement from cricket, we still often hear praises about him. However, behind every achievement Kapil Dev has attained in his life, there is hard work and struggle.
Now, we will learn how the son of a small wood merchant gave India a new identity in cricket.
The story begins on January 6, 1959, when Kapil Dev was born in Chandigarh, Punjab. His father’s name was Ramlal Nikhanj, who was a small wood merchant, and his mother’s name was Rajkumari.
Before the partition of Pakistan and India, Kapil Dev’s parents lived in Pakistan. However, after the partition, they moved to India, and thus, Kapil and his two brothers were born in India, while their four sisters were born in Pakistan.
Kapil Dev was interested in sports from an early age and was very fond of cricket. He completed his school education from DAV School, and people say that he was quite good at athletics there as well.
After his initial education, Kapil Dev went to St. Edward’s College, where he significantly improved his cricket skills. Seeing his growing interest in cricket, his family decided to send him for coaching. Although Kapil was always talented, he needed guidance in other aspects, and this was provided to him by former cricketer Desh Prem Azad.
“And the interesting thing is that Kapil Dev knew that to become a good bowler, his shoulders needed to be strong, so he used to do wood cutting as well.”
“And then, in a total of 30 matches that season, he took 121 wickets. Following his performance, he got the opportunity to play in the Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Wills Trophy, in addition to Ranji.”
After making a mark with his bowling at the domestic level, on October 16, 1978, he got the opportunity to play for Indian team in a Test match against Pakistan. Although, unfortunately, India lost the series, but India had found a brilliant bowler and a fast-paced hitter through this series.
Shortly after, he scored his first magnificent century against the West Indies. While anyone could have scored a century, this one was special for him because at that time, the West Indies’ bowling attack was considered the most dangerous. And then, Kapil Dev became the first Indian cricketer to take 25 wickets and 1,000 runs in 25 matches.
“And then, seeing his outstanding bowling, in November 1975, he got the opportunity to play for Haryana’s Ranji team. In his very first match, he took six wickets, making it clear to everyone that a new star was emerging in the cricket team.”
Thus, India found a brilliant all-rounder, and then, seeing his exceptional leadership skills, he got the chance to captain the team for the first time in 1982 against Sri Lanka. Although this opportunity was given to him because the regular captain, Sunil Gavaskar, was given a break, Kapil soon became the regular captain. His biggest challenge as captain came in 1983 when India had to play in the World Cup. At that time, no one considered India a contender to win, but under Kapil Dev’s leadership, the Indian cricket team proved everyone wrong, defeating the West Indies in the final and winning the World Cup for the first time. In this World Cup, Kapil Dev scored 303 runs and took 12 wickets.”Along with this, he also took a stunning catch with his excellent fielding, adding to India’s tally. After this match, he was considered one of India’s selected players who had the power to change the direction and outcome of a match. He went on to win many series for India and established himself among the world’s greatest players. After serving the Indian team until 1994, he retired. And friends, in this way, Kapil Dev played 131 matches, scored 5,238 runs, and took 434 wickets. These statistics placed him at the top among Indian cricketers. Additionally, for his contribution to cricket, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Arjuna Award.
If we talk about his personal life, he married a girl named Ruby Bhatiya in 1980. And friends, the good thing is that Kapil Dev is still not far from cricket, as we see him entertaining as an excellent commentator, and even in his presence, the country’s players receive a lot of support. In the end, it can be said that Kapil Dev is the aspiration for many player.
And his life teaches us that hard work is the key to success. We hope that you have definitely enjoyed the life story of Kapil Dev.”
